FAQ

There are two parts to the application. Candidates MUST complete both parts to be eligible for participation in the process.

Part 1: apply online in Workday by May 1, 2023.

Part 2: sign up for a Phase I timeslot and submit a hard-copy (paper) resume packet to the Office of the Chief no later than 4pm (1600h) MST on May 1, 2023. Hard-copy resume packets will be used by the panel for scoring.

A candidate’s hard-copy (printed) resume packet will include several components:

  • the candidate’s standardized resume (access the template above)
  • a copy of the candidate’s degree
  • copies of the candidate’s Fire Officer 1 & 2 certifications
  • copies of any validations supporting the individual’s resume items

Submit your requests for validation online (see form above). Complete all the necessary fields in the form. When submitted, the form will be sent to the appropriate individual for review and response. A Validation Request must be completed for every Support Work Assignment, Committee Work, and Instructor claim included on a candidate’s resume. Claims falling in these categories that do not have a validation will not receive points.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to follow up with the validator they identified in the request. Candidates should check to ensure the validator received the request and may inquire as to the status of completing the validation.

Generally speaking, the activities for which candidates may receive points are department-sponsored or provided. Activities outside the department (such as instructing with UFRA), while valuable to the candidate, are not eligible for points. Additionally, the activities for which candidates may receive points are larger in scope or nature than most of the duties required of a firefighter in the course of regular business. Activities such as crew-provided training are of value to the candidate but are not eligible for points. Refer to the resume scoresheet (see above) for a complete list of activities which may be eligible for points.

Note: at the recommendation of the committee, SLCFD’s Peer Support committee is not eligible for points.

No. At the recommendation of the committee, individuals are eligible to receive points for the specialty certification and are not eligible to receive additional points for activities done in support of that certification.

The committee developed a standard for awarding points for candidates’ resume items. Refer to the above resume scoresheet and/or Presentation of changes made to the Captain Promotional Process for more details.
